ARE you creative, shy, outgoing? Our personalities reveal a lot about who we are. But what’s surprising is that our personality can also say something about our health. That’s according to researchers at Duke University, US.

During an experiment on 1,000 people, scientists assessed (評定) their personalities in two ways: by asking someone they knew, such as a family member or friend; then by asking someone they had just met, such as a nurse. The study found that those who were careful at age 26 were in better health after 12 years.?

Being careful means that people tend to have a lot of self-control, and are less likely to smoke, the scientists said. Careful people are also more likely to have an active lifestyle and healthy diet.

From those who were least careful, 45 percent developed health problems by the age of 38. Such health issues included gum disease and high blood pressure (高血壓). To compare, only 18 percent of careful people went on to develop health problems.

Another positive personality was called “openness to experience”, meaning curious and imaginative. People who have more of this personality have higher IQ scores. So they’d be more likely to know how to find medical help to prevent disease.

According to the report, if doctors assessed our personalities, it could help doctors to find which young adults need advice on how to live a healthy lifestyle. What’s surprising is that stress didn’t play a big part on a person’s health. Even though stress and anxiety (焦慮) are usually linked to bad health.

But can a doctor who knows our personality really improve our health? Or should doctors be kept away from knowing something so personal?

A solar-powered(太陽能動力的) plane has passed an important test on the way to travel around the world. The plane took off from an airport in Switzerland at 45km an hour. it slowly rose above the fields and into the sky. During the 90-minute flight, the plane did several turns. It climbed nearly 1.6km above the countryside.

“There has never been an airplane of that kind that could fly – never an airplane so big, so light, using so little energy,” said Bertrand Piccard, a leader of the project.

Engineers plan to test a night light soon. They plan to travel around the world in that plane in 2012. “We want to fly it day and night without fuel,” Piccard said.

Piccard and pilot Andre Borschberg will take the plane around the world. They will make a few stops to change places and rest after a long time in the air – and to show off their aircraft.

The plane flies at 70 kilometers per hour on average. That is faster than a bike. The pilots will keep the plane in the air for up to five days at a time.

“If you consider getting older with needing less sleep, it’s not true!” says Robert Oexman. Besides sickness, medicine and pain, Dr. Oexman looks at his patients’ nighttime habits, which cause the most sleep problems. So, how are you destroying your sleep?

Watch TV until you fall asleep

It has nothing to do with what you watch. It’s because you face TV’s bright light. So even if you nod off in front of the TV, for example, you possibly can’t stay asleep for long.

So an hour before bedtime, treat yourself like a baby: a warm bath. But no reading or writing on your computer before bed or in the middle of the night.

Exercise too close to bedtime

Remember how poorly you sleep when you have a fever, never really feeling rested? Well, heavy exercise too close to bedtime has the same effect—it raises your body temperature, so that your sleep is not at best until your body temperature drops to normal, which may take several hours.

So no exercise at least three hours before bedtime to make sure your body temperature is normal.

Eat fatty, heavy foods too close to bedtime

If you’ve ever tried to go to sleep after eating a fatty meal, you’ve probably found the discomfort of stomach and you are less likely to fall asleep.

So try to eat your last meal of the day at least 2-3 hours before bedtime. Should you feel hungry before bed? So have a bowl of cereal or a small boiled potato. Or maybe have a serving of jasmine rice.
