Steve Jobs was a college dropout．He was adopted by a machinist and his wife，an accountant．They supported his early interest in electronics．He and his friend Steve Wozniak started Apple Computer-now just called Apple-in 1976．They stayed at the company until 1985．That year，Steve Wozniak returned to college and Steve Jobs left in a dispute with the chief executive．
Mr Jobs then formed his own company，called NeXT Computer．He rejoined Apple in 1997after it bought NeXT．He helped remake Apple from a business that was in bad shape then to one of the most valuable companies in the world today．However，Steve Jobs stepped down as Apple's chief executive in August because of his health．He died a day after the company released a new iPhone version that met with limited excitement．Steve left behind a company that only he could have built，and his spirit will forever be the foundation of Apple．
President Obama said in a statement：by building one of the planet's most successful companies from his garage，Steve Jobs exemplified the spirit of American ingenuity（獨創性的）．By making computers personal and putting the Internet in our pockets，he made the information revolution not only accessible，but intuitive and fun．

10．Being sociable looks like a good way to add years to your life．Relationships with family，friends，neighbours，even pets，will all work，but the biggest longevity （長壽） increase seems to come from marriage or an equal relationship．The effect was first noted in 1858by William Farr，who wrote that widows and widowers （鰥夫） were at a much higher risk of dying than their married peers．Studies since then suggest that marriage could add as much as seven years to a man's life and two to a woman's．The effect holds for all causes of death，whether illness，accident or self-harm．
Even if the conditions are not good for you，marriage can more than compensate．Linda Waite of the University of Chicago has found that a married older man with heart disease can expect to live nearly four years longer than an unmarried man with a healthy heart．Likewise，a married  man who smokes more than a pack a day is likely to live as long as a divorced man who doesn't smoke．There's a flip side，however，as partners are more likely to become ill or die in the couple of years following their husband's or wife's death，and caring for a husband or wife with mental disorder can leave you with some of the same severe problems．Even so，the odds favour marriage．In a 30-year study of more than 10，000people，Nicholas Christakis of Harvard Medical School describes how all kinds of social networks have similar effects．
So how does it work？The effects are complex，affected by socio-economic factors，health-service provision，emotional support and other more physiological （生理的） parts．For example，social contact can increase development of the brain and immune system，leading to better health and less chance of depression later in life．People in supportive relationships may handle stress better．Then there are the psychological benefits of a supportive partner．
A life partner，children and good friends are all recommended if you aim to live to 100．The ultimate social network is still being mapped out，but Christakis says："People are interconnected，so their health is interconnected．"

17．Two friends have an argument that breaks up their friendship forever，even though neither one can remember how the whole thing got started．Such sad events happen over and over in high schools across the country．In fact，according to an official report on youth violence，"In our country today，the greatest threat to the lives of children and adolescents is not disease or starvation or abandonment，but the terrible reality of violence"．Given that this is the case，why aren't students taught to manage conflict the way they are taught to solve math problems，drive cars，or stay physically fit？
First of all，students need to realize that conflict is unavoidable．A report on violence among middle school and high school students indicates that most violent incidents between students begin with a relatively minor insult （侮辱）．For example，a fight could start over the fact that one student eats a peanut butter sandwich each lunchtime．Laughter over the sandwich can lead to insults，which in turn can lead to violence．The problem isn't in the sandwich，but in the way students deal with the conflict．
Once students recognize that conflict is unavoidable，they can practice the golden rule of conflict resolution （解決）：stay calm．Once the student feels calmer，he or she should choose words that will calm the other person down as well．Rude words，namecalling，and accusations only add fuel to the emotional fire．On the other hand，soft words spoken at a normal sound level can put out the fire before it explodes out of control．
After both sides have calmed down，they can use another key strategy （策略） for conflict resolution：listening．Listening allows the two sides to understand each other．One person should describe his or her side，and the other person should listen without interrupting．Afterward，the listener can ask nonthreatening questions to clarify the speaker's position．Then the two people should change roles．
Finally，students need to consider what they are bearing．This doesn't mean trying to figure out what's wrong with the other person．It means understanding what the real issue is and what both sides are trying to accomplish．For example，a shouting match over a peanut butter sandwich might happen because one person thinks the other person is unwilling to try new things．Students need to ask themselves questions such as these：How did this start？What do I really want？What am I afraid of？As the issue becomes clearer，the conflict often simply becomes smaller．Even if it doesn't，careful thought helps both sides figure out a mutual solution．
There will always be conflict in schools，but that doesn't mean there needs to be violence．After students in Atlanta started a conflict resolution program，according to Educators for Social Responsibility，"64percent of the teachers reported less physical violence in the classroom； 75percent of the teachers reported an increase in student cooperation； and 92percent of the students felt better about themselves"．Learning to resolve conflicts can help students deal with friends，teachers，parents，bosses，and coworkers．In that way，conflict resolution is a basic life skill that should be taught in schools across the country．
