I began to work as a salesgirl in a department store. I got there that morning and was introduced to all the salesmen and saleswomen. Throughout the day, one of the salesmen talked with me. I thought we might become friends. That evening after work we went out for dinner. We sat together and talked, but our numbers were never exchanged.
Around 10 pm I began my 2-hour drive back. For the first part of the drive I was thinking to myself how stupid I had been for not giving him my number. Then all of a sudden, when I had gone around a comer I was completely over in another lane. There was no time to even hit brakes. I hit at once. The police came and cut the top of my car off to get me out. They sent me to the hospital quickly.
My mother got there late that night, and saw me lying in the emergency room. The next morning, mom called the manager and told him what had happened and that I would be in the hospital for a long time. A few hours later, I received a phone call -- it was the guy I hadn't given my number. Well, he came to visit me that night and the next night. We spent a lot of time together.
It was months before I would be walking and driving again, but he'd sit by me. I don't think I could have pulled through it without him. Now I can walk freely, and just this week we are planning on getting married one year after the day we met. It's just amazing how a tragedy like a
car accident could bring about such a wonderful relationship!

Last
April, on a visit to the new Mall of America near
I know already that the Mall of America had been imagined by its designers, not merely as a marketplace, but as a national tourist attraction. Elevan thousand articles, the small book informed me, had been written about the mall. Four hunched trees had been planted in its gardens, $625 million had been spent to build it, and 350 stores were already in business.
Three thousand bus tours were expected each year along with a
half-million Canadian visitors and 200, 000 Japanese tourists. Sales are
expected to be at $650 million for 2008 and at $1 billion for 2009. Pop singers
and film stars such as Janet Jackson and Arnold Schwarzeneggar visited the mall.
It was five times larger than Red Square and it included 2.3 miles of hallways
and used almost twice as Knott's

"When one of the doctors criticizes (批評) me, I get defensive. I feel like a child again, being scolded, and I want to explain that I'm not wrong," says Viola, a nurse. This is a common reaction to criticism, but not a good one. There are better ways of dealing with criticism.
Try to be objective (客觀的). When Sol was criticized by his new employer for not having made a sale, Sol's reaction was to feel sorry for himself. "I had put everything I had into making that sale," Sol says. "And I felt that I had failed as a person. I had to learn through experience not to react like that to each failure."
Take time to cool down. Rather than react at once to criticism, take some time to think over
what was said. Your first question should be whether the criticism is fair from the other person's position. The problem may be a simple misunderstanding of what you did or your reasons for doing it.
Take positive action. After you cool down, consider what you can do about the situation. The best answer may be "nothing". "I finally realized that my boss was having personal problems and taking them out on me because I was there," says Sheila. "His criticisms didn't really have anything to do with my work, so nothing I said or did was going to change them." In Sheila's case, the best way to deal with it was to leave her job. However, that's an extreme reaction.
You may simply explain your opinion without expecting an in-depth discussion. You may even decide that the battle isn't worth fighting this time. The key, in any ease, is to have a reasonable plan.
64.When Sol was criticized by his employer, he .
A.argued bitterly with his employer B.was angry and gave up his job
C.was sorry for what he did D.was sad and self-pitying
65.According to the writer, you should take time to think about criticism because .
A.people may have a mistaken idea of what you did
B.you should welcome other people's opinions
C.people may discuss it with you in depth
D.you need time to understand yourself
66.When the writer says that "the best answer may be ‘nothing' ", he means you may decide .
A.to take no notice of the criticism B.to argue with your boss
C.you need to change your job D.you've done nothing wrong
67.The writer thinks Sheila might decide to leave her job because her boss .
A.didn't like her appearance B.refused to change his opinion
C.made an unreasonable criticism D.refused to talk to her about the criticism

Trees should only be pruned (修剪) when there is a good and clear reason for doing so and, fortunately, the number of such reasons is small.Pruning involves the cutting away of overgrown and unwanted branches, and the inexperienced gardener can be encouraged by the thought that more damage results from doing it unnecessarily than from leaving the tree to grow in its own way.
First, pruning may be done to make sure that trees have a desired shape or size. The object may be to get a tree of the right height, and at the same time to help the growth of small side branches which will thicken its appearance or give it a special shape.Secondly, pruning may be done to make the tree healthier. You may cut diseased or dead wood, or branches that are rubbing against each other and thus cause wounds. The health of a tree may be encouraged by removing branches that are blocking up the centre and so preventing the free movement of air.
One result of pruning is that an open wound is left on the tree and this provides an easy entry for disease, but it is a wound that will heal.Often there is a race between the healing and the disease as to whether the tree will live or die, so that there is a period when the tree is at risk.It should be the aim of every gardener to reduce harm to the trees which have been pruned smooth and clean, for healing will be slowed down by roughness. You should allow the cut surface to dry for a few hours and then paint it with one of the substances available from garden shops produced especially for this purpose.Pruning is usually done without interference from the leaves and also it is very unlikely that the cuts you make will bleed. If this does happen, it is, of course, impossible to paint them properly.
72.Trees become unhealthy if the gardener .
A.allows too many branches to grow in the middle
B.does not protect them from wind
C.forces them to grow too quickly
D.damages some of the small side branches
73.Why is a special substance painted on the tree?
A.To make a wound smooth. B.To prevent disease entering a wound.
C.To cover a rough surface. D.To help a wound to dry.
74.A good gardener prunes a tree .
A.at times throughout the year B.as quickly as possible
C.occasionally when necessary D.regularly every winter
75.The best title for the passage may be “ ”.
A.Be careful to prune trees
B.When to prune trees
C.Trees should only be pruned with reason

Dear Jack,
In your last letter you asked how I spend my weekends, now let me tell you about.
In fact, we have lessons on Saturday, four in the morning and two in the afternoon. Often it takes me over two hours to do my homework in the evening. In this way I can be free on Sunday.
After days of hard work I try to relax myself on Sunday by surfing the Internet, taking exercise or visiting friends. Occasionaly I go for an outing with my classmates to get closer to nature. Sometimes I help do some housework. We are supposed to return to school before six on Sunday.
I wonder how you spend your weekends.
Best wishes,
Yours,
Li Hua
