What Should I Do?

One of the most popular items in the school newspaper advice column(欄目). No one know who writes it. The students think their teacher does, but it might be a student using a false name. The students enjoy thinking up problems for the advice column. Here are some of them and their answers.

ASK THE WISE OWL

Q: I’m always late for school. I try not to be, but I can’t help it. Please advise me what to do. Tommy.

A: You are probably late for school because you don’t really like school. My advice to you is try and enjoy school more, then you won’t be late so often.

Q: I find it difficult to make friends. What do you think I should do? Sara.

A: I can’t advise you until I know about you. Your problem may be that you are shy. On the other hand, it may be the opposite. You may be too bold(大膽的). Write and tell me more about yourself.

Q: I’m always at the bottom(底部)of the class. What do you advise me to do? Molly.

A: I advise you to concentrate(全神貫注) on improving your grades in one subject to start with. If you can do this, you should move a little way up from the bottom. Next, try to improve your grades in another subject, and so on. If you concentrate on one subject at a time, by the end of the year you should be quite a long way up from the bottom in all your classes. The Wise Owl.

There was once a young mouse that lived in a hole of a wall. One day, the young mouse woke up (醒來) and looked out of the hole. As he looked out, a fantastic smell came to his nose. “Cheese!” the mouse said happily to himself. “I’ll go and get it now and have it for breakfast.”

But then he remembered his parents’ words. His parents were clever mice and often said to their son. “Always wait before you go for a piece of cheese.”

So the young mouse waited quietly. Then he heard a quiet “Miaow” and he knew the cat was there. He stayed in the hole and said to himself, “I’m glad I listened to my parents and learned to wait.”

The next day, he looked out again. He put his nose out of the hole, and got the beautiful smell of cheese. It was only a few centimeters (厘米) away. But he sat still and waited quietly. This time he did not hear any cat noises. Instead he heard a very quiet “woof, woof.”

“ It’s a dog!” he thought. “If the dog is there, the cat won’t be there. I expect (料想) the dog has chased (追趕) the cat away, so I’m safe.” The mouse ran out of the hole and saw the cat. The cat caught him and ate him.

Jim, a successful businessman, told the experience of his childhood.

When he was 12, his parents died. He was alone and didn’t get on well with others. People always laughed at him. No one showed kindness to him.

His only friend was a dog named Tiger. He gave his dog enough to eat and drink, but sometimes he was not polite to it. He didn’t know that an unkind word sometimes could cut one’s heart like a knife.

One day as he walked down the street, a young lady was walking in front of him. Suddenly one of her bags dropped from her arms. As she stopped to pick it up, she dropped other bags. He came to help her. “Thank you, dear! You are a nice little boy!” she said kindly, smiling.

A special feeling came to him. These were the first kind words he had ever heard. He watched her until she went far away, and then he whistled (吹口哨)to his dog and went directly to the river nearby.

“Thank you, dear! You are a nice little boy!” he repeated (重復) the woman’s words. Then in a low voice he said to his dog! Tiger raised its ears as if it understood.

“Uhum! Even a dog likes it!” he said, “Well, Tiger, I won’t say unkind words to you any more.” Tiger waved its tail happily.

The boy thought and thought. Finally he looked at himself in the river. He saw a clean nice boy. He was amazed. From then on, he had a new life.

After telling this, the businessman stopped for a while, and then he said, “Ladies and gentlemen, this is the very place where that kind woman planted in me the first seed(種子) of kindness. All of us should learn about kindness. What a great power(力量) it has!”

任務型閱讀(10分)閱讀下列短文,根據短文中的信息完成文后表格。(每空一詞)

We all need a healthy environment, but we produce waster every day and it does harm to our environment. Though we are young, we can still do something to help. In fact, even the simplest everyday activities can make a real difference to the environment. Here are some ideas for you to live a green life.

Remember these three words; reduce, reuse and recycle(減量、再使用和再循環).

Reduce means “use less”. Don't waste things. This saves money and reduces pollution and waste going into the environment. Before we buy something new, think if it is really necessary or maybe the old one will be just as good! When we do buy things, choose local products if possible, and try not to buy too many things from abroad.

Reuse means “use again”. Use things for as long as possible. When we buy things, make sure that they last a long time. We should take care of them so that they will last, and we should repair them if we can instead of throwing them away and buying new ones. Don't use a paper cup or a paper bag. It's better to use a china cup and a lunch box because you can use them again.

Recycle means “change things into something else”. Although it takes energy to change something into something else, it's better than throwing things away or burning them. Find out what can be recycled in your neighbourhood and take part in recycling programmes. We should also buy products made from recycled materials, such as recycled paper, to help save trees.
