London used to be “foggy” for the same reason that cities like Beijing or Chongqing are “foggy” today. The “fog” was in fact smog, a mixture of smoke and fog.In other words, it was made by air pollution. In London, some of this pollution came from factories, but much of it came from the coal(煤)that people burnt in their houses to keep warm during the winter.By the 1950s, London’s smog problem had become so bad that the government decided to do something to clean the air.A new law was made and nobody could burn coal in any British city.Within a few years, the air became much cleaner. There were no more “pea-soupers”.
Many Chinese cities now face the same sort of problem with air pollution that London faced 40 or 50 years ago. However, this problem is more difficult for Chinese cities to solve. One reason is that more of the pollution comes from the factories, rather than from coal burnt in people’s houses. If these factories were closed, this would harm the economy and lots of people would lose their jobs.Another reason is that changing from coal to cleaner fuel(燃料), like gas, is quite expensive.
However, the air in many Chinese cities is becoming cleaner and cleaner, as the government and people pay more and more attention to cutting down pollution. As a result, there are fewer “pea-soupers”in Beijing than there used to be.

【小題3】What does the underlined work “pea-soupers”refer to?
A.Smog B.Smoke C.Gas D.Coal
【小題4】The problem of air pollution is more difficult for Chinese cities to solve because of ___ reasons.
A.one B.two C.three D.four

Evolution (進化) has changed our bodies and faces over thousands of years, and it’s still happening. Here’s how experts predict (預測) what people will be like in 1,000 years.
We’ll be about 1.83~2.13 metres tall because of improved nutrition (營養) and medical science. Our arms and fingers will get longer to reduce the need to reach too far.
We’ll have smaller brains, maybe because computers will help us memorize and think most of the things.
There will be larger eyes and smaller mouths. And there may be fewer teeth as softer food needs less chewing and biting. We could even get our nutrition from liquids or pills in the future.
We can expect other great changes too. Everyone will have the same shape of noses. That’s because climate will have less influence on noses with the help of air conditioning and central heating. Besides, we will have more wrinkles (皺紋) as a result of looking at our electronic devices.
We also may end up with saggy (松弛的) necks because extra sun will cause loose skin. And there will be darker skin as people move around the planet and races (種族) mix.

Sometimes I really doubt whether there is love between my parents. Every day they are very busy trying to earn money in order to pay the high tuition for my brother and me. They don't act in the romantic ways that I read in books or I see on TV. In their opinion, "I love you" is too luxurious for them to say. Sending flowers to each other on Valentine's Day is even more out of the question. Finally my father has a bad temper. When he's very tired from the hard work, it is easy for him to lose his temper.
One day, my mother was sewing a quilt. I silently sat down beside her and looked at her. "Mom, I have a question to ask you," I said after a while. "What?" she replied, still doing her work. "Is there love between you and Dad?" I asked her in a very low voice. My mother stopped her work and raised her head with surprise in her eyes. She didn't answer immediately. Then she bowed her head and continued to sew the quilt.
I was very worried because I thought I had hurt her. I was in a great embarrassment and I didn't know what I should do. But at last I heard my mother say the following words:
"Susan," she said thoughtfully, "Look at this thread. Sometimes it appears, but most of it disappears in the quilt. The thread really makes the quilt strong and durable. If life is a quilt, then love should be a thread. It can hardly be seen anywhere or anytime, but it's really there. Love is inside."
【小題1】 Why does Susan’s father have a bad temper?

A.Because he doesn’t love the family.
B.Because he doesn’t earn much money.
C.Because he’s very tired from the hard work.
D.Because he doesn’t act in the romantic ways.
【小題2】 In Susan’s opinion, _______________________.
A.her mother enjoys doing chores at home.
B.her parents love each other very much.
C.love means sending flowers on Valentine’s Day and saying “I love you”
D.her parents love to make money.
【小題3】 In the passage, “thread” may represent _______________.
A.Susan’s family B.the relationship between her parents
C.the daily life D.the love between her parents
